About the Label: Code Girls were an elite group of female codebreakers recruited from across the United States during World War II to serve in top-secret intelligence roles for the U.S. military. They were trained extensively in cryptography and cryptanalysis, then moved to secure facilities in Washington, D.C., where they decoded Japanese and German military communications. By 1945, women made up 70 percent of America’s codebreakers, and their work was critical to Allied victory.
